\/\/<\/span><\/p>\nFin mai, j\u2019ai rencontr\u00e9 dans un caf\u00e9 une fille qui revenait d\u2019Alert, au Nunavut. Alert, c\u2019est l\u2019endroit habit\u00e9 le plus au nord du monde. Il y a de la toundra, une base militaire et une station m\u00e9t\u00e9o. La fille \u2014 Sandrine, qu\u2019elle s\u2019appelle \u2014 a travaill\u00e9 l\u00e0 pendant quatre mois comme observatrice pour le Service m\u00e9t\u00e9orologique du Canada. Quatre mois \u00e0 travailler, manger et prendre du poids. Y a pas grand-chose \u00e0 faire \u00e0 Alert, qu\u2019elle disait en faisant la moue. J\u2019ai fait remarquer que c\u2019\u00e9tait quand m\u00eame assez fou qu\u2019elle ait habit\u00e9 aussi loin au nord et je lui ai demand\u00e9 si elle avait des histoires int\u00e9ressantes \u00e0 raconter sur son s\u00e9jour.<\/p>\n
\u2014\u00a0Rien pantoute. C\u2019\u00e9tait aussi plate qu\u2019on pouvait s\u2019attendre d\u2019un lieu isol\u00e9 du monde avec pas de soleil.<\/p>\n
\u2014\u00a0Come on, juste de vivre dans un endroit de m\u00eame, il a d\u00fb se passer des affaires. Des chicanes de coll\u00e8gues? Un ours polaire qui r\u00f4de dans la base?<\/p>\n
\u2014\u00a0Nope. Rien d\u2019excitant de m\u00eame. Les seules histoires, c\u2019\u00e9tait un gars vraiment passionn\u00e9 par l\u2019Arctique qui nous les racontait. Des histoires d\u2019exp\u00e9ditions, de naufrages. Ce genre d\u2019affaires l\u00e0.<\/p>\n
\u2014\u00a0\u00c7a m\u2019int\u00e9resse.<\/p>\n
\u2014\u00a0OK, mais je t\u2019avertis, il racontait pas mal mieux que moi.<\/p>\n
Sandrine a command\u00e9 un deuxi\u00e8me espresso et, quelques instants plus tard, m\u2019a catapult\u00e9 dans l\u2019Extr\u00eame Nord canadien.<\/p>\n

Il s\u2019appelle Miles. C\u2019est un vieux de la vieille, quelqu\u2019un qui conna\u00eet l\u2019Arctique comme le fond de ses bas. Je pense qu\u2019il est n\u00e9 dans le nord de l’Alberta il y a soixante ans de \u00e7a. En tout cas. \u00c7a fait des ann\u00e9es qu\u2019il travaille par intermittence \u00e0 Alert, pis il raconte ses histoires \u00e0 tous les nouveaux quand ils arrivent. C\u2019est une bonne mani\u00e8re de passer le temps quand la nuit dure des mois.<\/p>\n
Son histoire pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e, je l\u2019ai entendue genre trois fois, commence comme \u00e7a\u00a0:<\/p>\n
\u2014 They say Ellesmere Island\u2019s the northernmost island in Canada, but the truth is, there are two more islands northwest of it. Don\u2019t bother looking them up, though. They\u2019re not down on any map.<\/p>\n
Deux \u00eeles au-del\u00e0 d\u2019Ellesmere? J\u2019\u00e9tais sceptique, c\u2019est s\u00fbr, mais Miles est convaincant, d\u2019une certaine mani\u00e8re. Et puis\u2026 c\u2019est difficile de d\u00e9crire mon \u00e9tat d\u2019esprit quand je suis arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Alert. Il y avait une temp\u00eate de neige, ce soir-l\u00e0, ou ce jour-l\u00e0, je me souviens plus de l\u2019heure, mais il faisait noir. Tu te mets parfois \u00e0 douter de ce qui est r\u00e9el ou pas, dans ce genre de circonstances.<\/p>\n
\u2014\u00a0Crocker Land and Bradley Land, Miles disait. Together I call them the Ghost Islands.<\/p>\n
Miles avait pas grand-chose \u00e0 dire sur Bradley Land, qu\u2019il mentionnait juste dans le but d\u2019\u00eatre exhaustif. Crocker Land, par contre, \u00e9tait le sujet d\u2019une sorte de com\u00e9die d\u2019erreurs. Il y a eu une exp\u00e9dition pour la trouver, mais elle est all\u00e9e d\u2019\u00e9checs en \u00e9checs. On a ri. Miles est un dr\u00f4le de bonhomme, il avait vraiment sa fa\u00e7on \u00e0 lui de raconter \u00e7a, dans la petite caf\u00e9t\u00e9ria de la station \u00e0 Alert. Notre rire \u00e9tait un peu jaune, parce que nous aussi, on \u00e9tait pogn\u00e9s l\u00e0 dans le Grand Nord. Mais juste un peu.<\/p>\n

It all starts in 1906, when this man, Commander Robert Edwin Peary, comes back from the Arctic, claiming he\u2019s discovered some great new island. Crocker Land, he calls it. Why \u201cCrocker\u201d, you might ask? Well, this commander Peary was a pragmatic man. Crocker was the name of his backer in San Francisco. He\u2019d hoped to secure funds for his next expedition by naming the island after him. That was the first failure. There was an earthquake in San Francisco that year, and Crocker spent all of his fortune on rebuilding the city. Tough luck.<\/p>\n
But then Peary does go on exploring the north, and he comes back in 1909 claiming he\u2019s reached the North Pole for the first time in history. Thing is, this other man, named Cook, claims the same thing. Neither really did, by the way, but then it was a hotly debated topic. However, Cook\u2019s path went right through this Crocker Land that Peary described. If Crocker Land was indeed real, then Cook\u2019s claim would be debunked. So in 1913, another explorer, MacMillan, goes to the Arctic to investigate.<\/p>\n
And then the disaster really begins. A couple of weeks after departure, the captain\u2019s drunk and he almost sinks the ship when he hits some rocks while trying to avoid an iceberg. Kind of ironic, since the Titanic<\/em> sank from an iceberg collision the year before. Don\u2019t drink and drive, kids. Bad consequences if you do.<\/p>\nThey get another ship and eventually reach Greenland. They establish a base, but fail at building a radio station for communicating with the outside world. Then they go dog sledding on the sea ice to explore the area. Really poor conditions, some of them get badly frostbitten. Also, it\u2019s April, so the ice is thinning. Still, they press on, and eventually they spot Crocker Land on the horizon! It\u2019s got everything: mountains, hills, valleys, and it looks huge. But the Inuit in the party are unimpressed. They say it\u2019s poo-jok<\/em>. Mist. Illusion. And it is. The land moves and eventually disappears. It was probably a special kind of mirage called a\u00a0fata morgana<\/em>.<\/p>\nSo they go back, reaching land just on time since the sea ice breaks up the next day. Disaster averted! But then they\u2019re up there, in the Arctic, cut off from the world. They need rescue. And they\u2019ll wait four years for it. Four years here, you probably can\u2019t imagine. None of you kids ever stay in Alert for more than a few months. I understand that. It probably drove them mad, back in the 1910s. At some point, one of the American party members even murdered one of the Inuit with a rifle. Pretended an avalanche did it. Some later said he shot him because he had a relationship with the Inuk\u2019s wife. The things the Arctic can do to your mind, am I right? At best, you just become a weird old guy like me. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!<\/p>\n
\/\/<\/em><\/p>\nPour clarifier, j\u2019ai demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Miles si Crocker Land \u00e9tait vraiment fictive. Il a dit oui, Peary l\u2019avait m\u00eame \u00e9crit dans son journal de bord. C\u2019\u00e9tait une fraude du d\u00e9but \u00e0 la fin. Au moins, \u00e7a avait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 compl\u00e8tement inutile\u00a0: l\u2019exp\u00e9dition a quand m\u00eame ramen\u00e9 plein de photos et d\u2019artefacts.<\/p>\n
Quand la temp\u00eate s\u2019est calm\u00e9e, je suis sortie et j\u2019ai regard\u00e9 l\u2019oc\u00e9an Arctique. C\u2019\u00e9tait glac\u00e9 jusqu\u2019en Russie, probablement. Je sais m\u00eame pas o\u00f9 \u00e7a commen\u00e7ait exactement. C\u2019\u00e9tait s\u00fbrement pas dur de croire \u00e0 l\u2019existence d\u2019une \u00eele de plus ou de moins, s\u2019il y avait un mirage \u00e0 l\u2019horizon.<\/p>\n
C\u2019est un endroit sp\u00e9cial, l\u2019Extr\u00eame-Arctique. Faut vraiment en faire l\u2019exp\u00e9rience. Pas trop, quand m\u00eame, parce que sinon, si c\u2019est vrai que tu finis par devenir comme Miles, je pr\u00e9f\u00e9rerais \u00e9viter \u00e7a.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Sandrine si elle pensait retourner \u00e0 Alert. Elle a dit non, elle commen\u00e7ait cet automne une formation pour devenir pr\u00e9visionniste, ce qui est une coche au-dessus du m\u00e9tier d\u2019observatrice. Elle ferait de la m\u00e9t\u00e9o \u00e0 distance, bien confortable dans un bureau de Place Bonaventure.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Pas \u00e0 Alert. Ts\u00e9, c\u2019est tellement au nord qu\u2019il y a m\u00eame pas d\u2019aurores bor\u00e9ales.<\/p>\n
